Sebastian's mother Jane Gates is named Tesco Magazine Mum of the Year

Sebastian's mother and Director of Sebastain's Action Trust, Jane Gates, has been chosen as Tesco Magazine's Mum of the Year for her bravery and generosity in turning her personal tragedy into positivity for others.

Since her son Sebastian's death at Christmas 2003, Jane has worked tirelessly to make his vision of a holiday house, where sick children and their families can enjoy time togther, a reality. She also continually strives to find new ways to support families with seriously ill children and leads a programme of practical support initiatives.

The Tesco Magazine Mum of the Year Awards, which are in their fifth year, honour the achievements of exceptional mums who touch the lives of people around them and Jane was selected as the competition's overall winner out of 4,000 nominees. Jane was nominated by her mother Pam Walters.

Jane said: “I’m very touched by my mother’s letter nominating me for this Tesco award, which I think is a wonderful celebration of being a mother.

"Being Mummy to Rebecca and Sebastian is the most important thing in my life and I feel honoured to have two such wonderful children.

I’m tremendously flattered by this award; I hope that it is a reflection of the charity’s efforts to support children with life-limiting illnesses.”

 

In addition to Jane as the oeverall winner, nine category winners were also selected by a panel of judges which inluded the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown. Jane and the other winners will recieve their awards on Sunday 28th February in a special ceremony at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London.

Jane will also attend a special meeting with Sarah Brown and the other winners at Number 10 Downing Street.
